Patagonian-BaseCamp Week ending March 7 Report

Published March 7th, 2014 by Jean Chaintreuil

It's Friday morning now, a fantastic group of 9 anglers just left Patagonian-BaseCamp for their transfer to the Chaiten airport and I am going over the weekly angling logs the guides wrote up and I am checking the photos of the week. It was just a fantastic week. Beautiful weather, clear rivers, spectacular fishing and just a lot of fun topped-off by a great farewell party last night. The feast included a “to-die-for” lamb meal, and even live music performed by Dave. At the end, guides climbed on the dinner table for a little "board walk action". Fun, fun, fun!

Fly Fishing, Children And Magic

As a fisherman and professional fly fishing guide, the single most gratifying moment in my many years on the water is the moment a young person catches their first fish on the fly when I am fishing with them. Unfortunately, today with competition from video games, Internet and general urbanization of our culture, it’s becoming a rarity to capture a child’s attention at all. They seem to be more interested in adding friends to their Facebook accounts.  To make a child’s experience on the creek successful, you have to keep a few things in mind.  A child’s attention span for any activity is tough to capture and even more tough to hold; especially when fly fishing. Make certain that the proposed area your fishing with a child has fish to catch. For inland waters, stocked ponds and streams can be productive for a good part of the year. For lake run fish in the tributaries, the timing is a bit more critical. Rule number one: make certain there are fish to catch!
