Patagonian-BaseCamp Week ending March 7 Report

Published March 7th, 2014 by Jean Chaintreuil

It's Friday morning now, a fantastic group of 9 anglers just left Patagonian-BaseCamp for their transfer to the Chaiten airport and I am going over the weekly angling logs the guides wrote up and I am checking the photos of the week. It was just a fantastic week. Beautiful weather, clear rivers, spectacular fishing and just a lot of fun topped-off by a great farewell party last night. The feast included a “to-die-for” lamb meal, and even live music performed by Dave. At the end, guides climbed on the dinner table for a little "board walk action". Fun, fun, fun!

And then the fishing: What a week! The rivers are running low, but are all in top form. Dry fly fishing is fantastic. All our main rivers, Rio Palena, Rio Figueroa and Rio Rosselot, produced well. Christie had the best day of fishing of her life on the Rosselot, when she hooked at least 40 fish on dry flies on her last day. Her husband Brent had a similar experience the day before on the Figueroa. Talking about Brent, picture this: Zach was guiding him and Bill down the banks of the Rosselot when he hooked a 17 inch rainbow; Zach netted it, unhooked it and just threw the Chubby Chernobyl over board dangling off Brent's rod which he held over his shoulder, not more than 10 inches from the boat. A 15 inch rainbow came up and ate it even before the first fished was released! Not bad, 32 inches of fish in the net.

But not only Christie and Brent had great days. Betsy caught her biggest brown ever and so did Mike. Rob and Bob had some unforgettable days out of our TempleCamp, and Bob landed a beautiful brown in the Palena with guide Hayden. Dave, our live harmonica performer, deserves the prize for bad luck. Perfectly working the banks of the Palena, he moved 6 or 7 huge browns, but only one, a good 22 incher, stayed on. No complaints from him, however, as he caught a bunch of other rainbows and smaller browns.

But without any doubt, the King of the week was Beau. Next to fantastic fishing he had on the Palena and Rosselot, he caught, in two consecutive days, a 25 and 26 inch brown on the Figueroa. Both on a rubber leg nymph fished as a dropper under a large dry fly.

Now getting ready for another week. It's March. I love March and can’t wait to write my next report. I’ll bet you it's going to be a good one.

Water color: perfectly clear
Water level: lowest ever
Water temperature: 48 to 62
Air temperature: anything from 65 to 82
Weather conditions: mix of clear and cloudy days
Big fish landed: Beau's 26 and 25 incher, Mike's, Dave's and Brent's 22-ers, further 20+ fish for every one
