The Miramichi River has been "THE"
destination of serious Atlantic Salmon fishermen for over a
century. Little wonder when you consider the Miramichi River
produces annual Atlantic salmon runs in excess of 70,000 fish. An
astounding 80% of all rod-caught Atlantic salmon are taken on the
Miramichi system.
Smoker Brook offers extensive private
water and access to some of the most remote and breathtaking
rivers in the region and outfit and guide on ten tributaries of
the Miramichi.
THE FISHING: The variety of terrain offers a plethora of
fishing opportunities. From the meandering channels and gravel
bars of the lower river to the fast-flowing boulder-strewn streams
like the Big Sevogle with its deep clear holding pools, the
Northwest has enough water to keep a salmon fisher happy for a lifetime.
The home waters are on the lower river, about 15 miles from the
head of tide and feature several easily assessable pools
and runs as well as the home pool at the mouth of Smoker Brook.
There are in excess of 20 pools that the Lodge has access to
within 4 miles of the Lodge. Given the right water conditions you
travel to these remote areas by canoe. We concentrate on the
Northwest and its Tributaries but have access to private and
public water on all branches
of the Miramichi River.
The Season begins on April 15, provided the ice is out. For
the first month most of the fishing is done from boats. Spring
fishing is usually action filled with really good days having 30
fish brought to the boat, some of them as big as 46 inches. Near
the end of May start to look for the first run of bright fish just
in from the ocean. The Northwest boasts one of the earliest runs
in Atlantic Region. These salmon are usually in the 10lb to 20lb
range and are a favorite for their mean spirit once hooked.
(You'd better have 200 yards of backing!) By the first of June,
the 'Big Run', some 20,000 salmon, starts to arrive and this
continues throughout June and July.
During the warmer summer months the upper tributaries offer
superb opportunities as the runs of May, June and July settle in
the cool deep waters of the mountain streams. The relatively small
rivers hold enough dry fly potential to keep one's attention
focused.
Late in August temperatures begin to fall and the salmon are
triggered into action. Bright colored flies to match the Maples,
Birch and Poplar are the order of the day. September rains will
bring a new flood of bright crimson salmon in from the salt. The
rivers continue to fill with large hens and big old hook bills
until the close of the season on the 15th of October.
"Great flies, great food, great fish, great guide, great
everything..." Douglas Grann, Minneapolis,
MN
"Our entire group enjoyed the stay a great deal. The
comfortable accommodations and delicious meals along with the
opportunity to fish such varied and interesting waters all
combined to make for a wonderful experience."
Bill Taylor, President, Atlantic Salmon
Federation
