Owen River Lodge: New fishing access!

Rainbow Station is a large pastoral leasehold farm in the Upper Wairua Valley that shares its boundary with New Zealand's largest farm - Molesworth Station. There is a private road that runs through Rainbow Station, all the way to Hanmer Springs. As this is a private road, access to the Upper Wairua River for guided fishing purposes is controlled by Rainbow station. After 4 years of trying to gain access, Owen River Lodge is now one of the few guiding operations that have permission to guide on the Upper Wairua and Rainbow Rivers. This will give Owen River Lodge guests access to more rivers and stunning iconic New Zealand landscape.

JP Ross Blue Line Rod in Alaska: The second week of August we took a group to fish for Leopard Rainbows, Dolly Vardens, and an assortment of salmon to the Chosen River in western Alaska. The rod of choice for the rainbows and Dollys is a 6 weight and the JP Ross Blue Line 5 piece 9 foot rod was fantastic. I balanced the rod with a Ross Evolution LT 3 reel and a Royal Wulff Triangle Taper floating line. And this is a dynamite combination!

The rod was custom made as all JP Ross rods are. This one was blue with green wraps (Travel Adventures colors) and customized in every aspect, including a Travel Adventures inscription on the butt section. The rod casts without effort, loads easily, casts well short or long (60’ or more), and mends better than any rod I have owned.

Upper Base Camp takes a total of 12 guests and each day, 6 guides with two anglers leave in the morning to venture up or down river. In agreement with their permit as the only outfitters on the river with power boats, they only use the jet motors once per day. Four of the six days on the river I gave up the rod for the day to allow guests and guides a first-hand experience. All had great comments and agreed with my assessment.

This will be my “go to” rod whenever I need a 6 weight, for sure. Oh, did I say that it catches fish too?

Have you tried a JP Ross Rod? These are great rods, and we are very happy to endorse them. We would be glad to let you try one for a day on any of our escorted trips.
