Report: Taimen Fishing in Mongolia

Last month we were in Mongolia. Chasing the big taimen in the home river of Chinggis Khaan. This trip was my first on the lower section of the river. The lower river is more rugged, isolated, and holds more water than the upper sections. In my opinion, the upper and lower sections fish equally well with perhaps a slightly better trout fishing advantage to the upper and marginally better taimen fishing given to the lower. The scenery in both sections is striking. Mongolia has legally designated this river as catch and release/fly fishing only for all international anglers.

We had one really cold day (which actually helps the taimen fishing), otherwise the weather was near perfect. As usual, a class act from all the crew – guides, boatmen, cooks. The fishing was A+ as well. No gigantic taimen, but taimen every day, and several over 30” for all anglers. And a couple over 40” that could not be landed at boat side.

We are making plans to return again in 2013. Let us know now if you are interested, as this fishery is attracting a lot of attention and dates fill quickly. As of now, only one week is available for 2012. Call us if you have questions about a taimen trip to Mongolia. We will help with everything you need for a very memorable trip.

Wine Bottles ... Safe In Transit

How often have you wanted to bring a bottle of wine -- or maybe a sample of the local firewater -- home from your travels...but worried it would smash in your luggage?

One easy (and cheap) solution is to pack kids' swimmies with you when you travel. When time comes to pack for your return trip, just inflate the water wings and slip over your bottle for better protection.

It's a funny one...but one you'll surely celebrate when you uncork that bottle back home.

January 6 to 13
February 10 to 17
March 13 to 23

The lodge fills fast, with may anglers repeating year after year. The Travel Adventure escorted trip to Chile and BaseCamp is January 27 to February 3. Two spots are currently available,
