Fly Fishing Iceland
Fly Fishing Trip or Lodge Details:
Fly Fishing Iceland sets the standards expected for professional and
expert fly fishing guides. All guides work hard, with patience and determination,
to give guests a productive and memorable day of fishing.
Day trips or longer trips for salmon or trout can easily be arranged.
For trout fishing, 3-6 weight, 9 foot rods work well. For salmon, 6-8 weight
single handed rods, or longer switch- or spey-rods (12-1/2-14 feet).
DAY TRIPS: A day trip for trout and char to high quality waters near Reykjavik
is perfect for a short break from the capitol of Iceland.
LAKE FISHING: Lake fishing is a 40 minute drive from Reykjavik. Char run 1-2 kg, and browns over 10 kg are caught
each year. Lake Thingvellir is the usual destination.
BROWN TROUT: Brown trout trips can cover many lakes and streams, usually
north of Reykjavik. Average catch? 15-20 trout, 1-2 kg in size and a good day
of fishing would keep you busy! And bigger trout are always possible.
CHAR FISHING: Char fishing in Iceland is very good. Char can sometimes be
the most challenging fish in Iceland to catch. Patience is required!
Char average 1-2 kg; bigger fish to 4 kg.
MOUNTAIN FISHING: Mountain fishing in Iceland is probably one of the
best-hidden secrets. If you like magnificent scenery, stunning mountains
and hard volcanic land forms, then this is the place. Here you can catch
hard fighting char and colorful browns in mountain lakes or craters and
mountain rivers. And with less pressure.
ICELAND'S BEST TROUT WATERS: Lake Thingvellir is for the big brown trout, or
combine the Holá River with Lake Thingvellir to include good char fishing.
Mountain fishing in Landmannalaugar is very nice; very good char
fishing; brown trout as well, but they are not as big (0,5 kg to 2,5 kg).
The Laxa River is suggested for dry fly fishing – excellent for brown trout.

Gundmundur, (Gummi) of Fly Fishing Iceland is a wonderful guide into
the fishing and the spirit of Iceland. My guided trip with him to the
backroads and cabins on his native country was a fishing trip of a lifetime.
Gummi is both a good guide and companion. He will find fish and help you discover
Iceland. Highly recommended. ~~ James Vesely, Seattle, WA
World class fishing on different rivers and lakes, even fishing one evening
well past midnight with the sun still shining.... (a first). At the half way point
of our visit, we moved out to a country house to be closer to the fishing, making
it comfortable and another Icelandic experience. Overall, this was one of the best
trips I’ve taken for its diversity of experiences, but also in trying to absorb
the Icelandic personality and better understanding a people as vigorous as
Icelanders are... I was so impressed that I’m organizing a return trip,
but bringing my family in the summer of 2012 .... ~~ R. Colt Bagley III,
Paget, Bermuda
A good friend of mine asked me if I had any interest in joining him on a
fishing trip to Iceland the last week of May 2011.Having little fly fishing
experience and with no experience in Iceland I immediately said "yes" to the
invite. It is too early in May for the salmon to be running, but we fished
rivers for char and lakes for huge brown trout. We fished by day and we
fished at night in the midnight light of Iceland. Gummi lives and breathes
fish and fishing. He knows his craft cold. But there is more to the man,
much more. I will go back to Iceland to discover more of that incredible
island nation. I will definitely go back to Gummi. ~~ Don Scammell, Lake
Placid, NY
